The Foundation contributed to creating a tomb monument to Mykhailo Ponomarenko who was a teacher, ethnographer, polyglot, translator, and WWII veteran.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

M. Ponomarenko is the author of 3,000 historical articles and essays, an honorary member of the National Union of Ukrainian Ethnographers, and a laureate of the Antonovich and Maksimovich prizes.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

It was Mykhailo Ponomarenko who discovered  the first written record about the town of Zolotonosha<\/a>, which dated back to 1576. Read more here<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tombstone was unveiled on Ponomarenko\u2019s grave in the Zolotonosha City Cemetery  on April 26, 2012.  <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mykhailo Ponomarenko (October 28, 1920 – January 1, 2010) was a Ukrainian ethnographer, teacher and public figure; as well as an author of extensive research works on the history of Zolotonosha.  Additionally, Ponomarenko was the founder and director of the Zolotonosha Ethnographic Museum from 1960-1978, which was later named after him. Ponomarenko was also the first laureate of the Mykhailo Maksymovych  Ethnographic Prize in 1994. In 1975, he was awarded the title of Honored Teacher of Ukraine<\/em> and also taught French, German and Spanish in the Zolotonosha school district.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based on documents found in the archives of Moscow, Kyiv, Leningrad, Poltava, and Cherkasy, Ponomarenko  prepared and published more than 3,000 historical articles. Among his  works there are historical and documentary essays: The town of Zolotonosha<\/em>, Zolotonosha District <\/em>and Zolotonosha Ethnographic Museum<\/em>. The ethnographer created numerous works in co-authorship: Zolotonosha during the WWII<\/em>, Journey through Zlatokray<\/em>, and a multi-volume edition, History of towns and villages of the USSR<\/em> (Cherkasy region).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mykhailo Ponomarenko also possessed an outstanding poetic talent and created five collections of poetry. As a linguist, Ponomarenko  translated works from Spanish, Portuguese, Italian, German, French, English and Czech.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mykhailo Ponomarenko was a laureate of the Antonovich National Prize and Maksimovych Regional Prize.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, Ponomarenko was actively involved in the political processes of the Zolotonosha district as well as the Cherkasy region. He developed the Narodnyy Rukh<\/em> (People’s Movement), founded the bloc: Democratic Zolotonosha<\/em>, and was the first to raise the Ukrainian blue and yellow flag over Zolotonosha. He was the editor for the local Rukh newspaper Volia<\/em>  in 1990-91. Ponomarenko participated in the foundation of Narodnyy Rukh <\/em>of Ukraine and all its subsequent national democratic forums.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
