In May 2012, Bogdan Gubsky donated a unique portrait print of Taras Shevchenko to the Shevchenko National Reserve in Kaniv. The portrait was created in 1860 by V. Gutovsky from a lithograph by A. Kostyukevich. The last owner of the portrait was the well-known collector Volodymyr Yatsyuk, Deputy Director of the Taras Shevchenko National Museum (Kyiv).
According to experts from the National Art Museum of Ukraine, this is a “rare print of artistic and historical value.” The artwork was created in a complex technique. First, the photo portrait was etched on a stone, and then transferred onto paint and paper. Experts emphasize the photographic similarity of the portrait, in contrast to the artworks by other portraitists who had an artistic vision of Shevchenko`s image.
Other photo portraits of Taras Shevchenko have several copies, while there is only one copy of this particularly unique portrait.
