Literary Contest: My Village – My One and Only
The development of a child’s creative skills is of the utmost importance and helps build confidence while encouraging independent thinking. Bogdan Gubsky`s Foundation made it one of their priorities to discover and support creative students with outstanding abilities in their native language, literature and history.
In 2000, the Foundation in alliance with the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine held All-Ukrainian contest for the best literary work among students of rural schools My Village – My One and Only
Over 45,000 students from all over Ukraine participated in this contest. As a result of the contest, two collections of the best children’s literary works Children of the Earth (2000) and Chysti Dzherela (Clear Springs) (2001) were published.
The students who participated in the literary contest cared about the Ukrainian village by sharing their hopes and dreams for a better future of their countryside and Ukraine as a whole.
Revisiting village and folk culture through writing, evoked memories and dreams of previous generations of peasants who had passed through uneasy times of the Ukrainian history, and reignited an appreciation for the past, and the moral values and fortitude of the Ukrainian peasantry.
100 winners of the contest with their teachers were invited to Kyiv for an awards assembly. Everyone was honored with diplomas and gifts. More than 20 alumni received recommendations for the philology and journalism departments of Ivan Franko Lviv National University and Taras Shevchenko Kyiv National University.
